EDRAM General Assembly and Spring Meeting 2005

Top-level representatives of organisations responsible for radioactive waste management in 10 OECD countries held their spring meeting in Switzerland on 18th/19th May. The main topic of the meeting was the exchange of knowledge, experience and information on ongoing waste management activities. In this respect, priority is assigned to safe handling of existing wastes. For long-term containment of high-level waste, there is a clear trend towards deep geological disposal. The next one to two years will see important decisions being made on the technical feasibility of deep disposal and the procedures to be followed for site selection.

A further topic was collaboration and coordination of EDRAM?s interests with international organisations. One of the issues to be looked at is how the high-level technical expert reports of the OECD/NEA on selected waste management topics can be made accessible to a broader public. A working group will also coordinate the research requirements of EDRAM members with the proposals for the 7 th Framework Programme of the EU.

The members approved a report on "waste ownership and long-term liabilities" .(Report is available under "joint activities").The report documents the results of an analysis conducted by a working group of the different situations in the EDRAM member countries.
