Posiva, the Finnish waste management organization hosted the 2008 EDRAM Spring Meeting and General Assembly in Helsinki, April 23-25, 2008.
As is standard practice, EDRAM members reported on progress in their countries on implementing solutions for the long-term management of radioactive wastes. A decision was taken to provide in future on the EDRAM website a summary of status of implementation in the various member countries. SKB and POSIVA reported on their experiences in the national siting processes for underground repositories. In both countries, public acceptance is of highest relevance for site selection. In this context, procedure has shown that communities already familiar with nuclear facilities see the benefits of such facilities with regard to economy and job market. Therefore, public at such sites is also willing to accept a repository. A tour of the ONKALO underground research laboratory, now under construction at the Olkiluoto site, was arranged by POSIVA.
Jean-Paul Minon, CEO of ONDRAF/NIRAS, the Belgium waste management organization was elected as EDRAM Chairman for a 2-year period, replacing Ken Nash, CEO of the NWMO, the Canadian waste management organization, at the completion of his term.
