The 2008 EDRAM Winter Meeting took place in London on invitation of NDA, November 17, 2008.
First issue of the meeting was a report on the development of relationships between EDRAM and NEA. As for EDRAM cooperation with the European Commission (EC) a significant number of actions are going on. The Commission is specially interested on analyzing the economical factors governing geological disposal. The EURAD-WASTE´08 conference was used by several agencies for stakeholder information. Furthermore, the EDRAM members have been informed by the "High Level Group" on a forthcoming new nuclear safety EU directive as well as on an EU´s Council Resolution on Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management. Results from a questionnaire on high-level waste and spent fuel answered by six European agencies were brought together into a "Roadmap to successful implementation of geological disposal in the EU" drafted by the EC. The paper will be discussed at the next EDRAM meeting.
The status of the implementation of a geological disposal-technology platform was presented. This platform supports scientific, technological and socio-political work on final disposal in the European countries. In the context of these EU initiatives EDRAM will take the opportunity to make clear the position of the implementers.
In the course of an IAEA´s initiative, several EDRAM members are involved in DISPONET, a network aimed at supporting and training less developed IAEA member states in safe radioactive waste management. As is standard practice, EDRAM members reported on progress in their countries on implementing solutions for the long-term management of radioactive wastes. Short summaries of these country reports are also given at this website at "Joint Activities-Country Reports". Results of a questionnaire on international benchmarking of community benefits at repository sites are currently compiled and analyzed and will be discussed next time. Socio-economic aspects at repository sites have been analyzed in five presentations from France, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium and Sweden. The next meeting will be in Tokyo, Japan, April 22-23 and a following technical tour to the Horonobe URL at April 24-25, 2009.
